Dell Inspiron 1520 Review

There is no doubt that the Dell Inspiron 1520 is the counterpart of the Inspiron 1720. Considering the outlook only, it is apparently the same notebook, but smaller. It has the same curves and even the same color choice.

Not absolutely, the design of the display cover can be freely chosen. Therewith Dell follows the increasing shift to individual design.

The reviewed notebook had a  matte black display cover surface, which felt velvety, nearly rubberized. The coating appeared very robust in contrary to the diverse glossy piano coatings.

The decent silver case has a good flexural rigidity and pressure resistance. Handling the notebook, no creaking noise got evident, besides when pressing the display cover. The size of the gaps above the keyboard could not completely convince. Besides the left gap was bigger than the right one, the size of the gap was generally too big, as its width is more than 1mm.

The two hinges were unable to hold the 15" inch display without some wobbling. Still, they seemed robust and durable. The display in light clamshell design is securely locked by a ramshorn hook. But, you can detect a clear possible wobbling of the display, if closed.

The rather sparely provided interfaces are distributed at the back side and the back parts of the notebook's flanks. This order is user-friendly as the front side and the areas beside the notebook are free of disturbing cable spaghetti.

We especially missed a video port - a digital video out. The size of the plug was the mostly brought forward argument that a DVI could not be provided, but, this excuse won't hold water any longer since the introduction of the HDMI port.

Dell's latest Inspiron range not only uses Intel's latest Centrino technology for speed and power, but also adds a dash of colour for style. Internally, the dell Inspiron 1520 battery looks similar to the older models, but the new external aesthetic combined with the powerful components makes for a great all purpose machine that can handle most tasks you'll throw at it.

Our review model runs on Windows Vista Home Premium and offers one of the high-end Centrino Duo CPUs from Intel's latest Centrino platform (Santa Rosa), the T7500 2.20GHz CPU with an 800MHz front side bus (FSB). Not only is the processor speedy, but the greater bandwidth of the larger FSB allows more of that power to be put to use.

Also installed is 2GB of DDR2 RAM; an amount that seems to be fairly standard with many of the new Centrino notebooks. Rather than rely on Intel's new graphics chip, Dell has chosen to install an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics chip for a little more oomph. All up these components helped the Inspiron 1520 do well in our tests and we were impressed by its performance in our battery tests, too.

One thing that can easily be said about most low cost notebook computers is that they lack much in terms of style. Dell is trying to break that image by offering their latest Inspiron notebook computers in seven colors other than black. Of course, you still can get black if you want something that fits in with the crowd. The real question is what about the rest of the computer. Does it perform as well as it looks? However, one can't help feeling that this particular configuration is a little unbalanced. The benefit of HSDPA in a notebook that weighs in excess of 3kg and features a 15.4in display is questionable, and with this included the price is a by no means cheap - £1,100 inc. VAT and shipping. I'd sooner drop the expensive HSDPA module for a faster 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7300, which would really boost overall performance. It goes without saying that this configurability is one of the main attractions of buying a Dell over other brands such as Toshiba or Acer, and this is something I'll explore further later on in the piece.

Acer Aspire 3000 Review

I have had the Acer laptop , Aspire 3000 for about 4 years now. For the most part, it works very good. I was able to do everything that I wanted. I didn’t have much problem but there is one thing and that is the battery of the computer is never good. The acer aspire 3000 battery doesn’t work by itself for anymore than a couple of minutes.

If I use the laptop with the battery only and don’t plug it in, the battery would die off and the computer wouldn’t work anymore. It won’t last for more than a minute and this the thing that really frusrated me. I couldn’t do anything with the battery alone.

I did try to recharge the computer but it doesn’t fully load like most people would say. I saw that other computer battery last for hours. I think that Acer need to work on this aspire 3000 baterry problem with their laptop. I don’t know if any body else is having the issue like me or it’s just that I bought a really bad one. I bought it at the store and it’s brand new in condition.

All though I love Acer as they are one of the few companies that offer AMD and Intel, I have moved to Acer now the Compaq has merged with HP and I am very happy with Acer. But there are a few things that Acer should do on Learn from Campaq and put a on off switch for the touch pad, out Do even Compaq and Give us a on/off for the built in mics. A standard SD slot would be good as only their better systems have SD readers; and the systems realy ned far better batteries I don’t use alot of battery power but some people I know are not happy with acer aspire 3000 batteries. but the system for what it dose is very very good I yet to have a problem other then they touch pad has no on off switch but I realy can’t say anything real bad i can boot from exteral devices, run Linux on the system, no cheep bios lock-outs like alot of Dells and runs alot cooler then my Intel laptop… I like my system and have told a few of my buds to get this model.

One other thing that I have is that the computer tend to freeze on me often. I hate it when it happens. I can’t turn it off or get out of the screen. It would sit there for hours and the only thing I can do is pull the plug on it which is a very bad thing because it can ruin your computer.

After having it for a couple of years, it could use a RAM and even a processor upgrade. In all I recommend it to anyone looking for a bang for your buck PC. Just one last thing about this computer, if you ever need to get a new power adapter make sure to get exactically the right voltage. I got a universal adapter and the voltage was slightly higher than the battery and the aspire 3000 battery died after 8 months. Stupid move on my part, but just be careful.

Dell INSPIRON 4150 SERIES Laptop Review

Dell's Inspiron 4150 caters for people who are prepared to sacrifice a certain amount of portability, so long as, in return, they get a well-featured and fast notebook that can handle most applications with ease. Therefore, although this 2.85kg Mobile Pentium 4 system cannot be described as ultraportable, nor is it anything like as bulky and heavy as the 3.5kg-plus Inspiron 8200 series of genuine desktop replacement systems.

Our review sample was based on a 1.9GHz Mobile Pentium 4 processor, along with Intel's 845 chipset and 256MB of DDR SDRAM (expandable to 1GB via two SODIMM sockets). Other models in the range come with Mobile Pentium 4 CPUs running from 1.6GHz up to 2GHz. The 4150 has a 14.1in. TFT display, which can either be a high-resolution SXGA+ (1,400 by 1,050 pixel) unit, as in our review system, or a more conventional — and cheaper — XGA (1,024 by 768 pixel) screen. The display is driven by ATI's Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics accelerator with 32MB of DDR memory.

This is a two-spindle notebook, with a fast 5,400rpm 40GB IBM hard drive and either a floppy or a DVD/CD-RW combo drive in the modular bay. The second front-mounted bay holds the system's 4,400mAh Li-ion dell inspiron 4150 battery.

The Inspiron 4150 battery outperforms my 4100 machine but not by a huge margin as the specification may suggest. If you didn't know any better, the Pentium 4-M specs suggest that it should perform twice as fast as my "wimpy" Inspiron 4100. Don't always take stock from raw numbers.

The 4150 does have alot going for it. The memory is twice as fast, the motherboard speed (bus speed) is 2.5-3 times faster, and there is a faster hard drive to boot over my Inspiron 4100. Unfortunately, the 1.6 GHz Pentium 4-M processor is slower in most applications than a 1.2 GHz Pentium III-M processor. Yes, you read that right. The only time the Pentium 4-M outshines the Pentium III-M is if the software was compiled towards the special command sets on the Pentium 4-M processor (P4-M)… then the P4-M really rocks the house. Such software is only just starting to come out now. In actuality, my opening and closing windows and other programs on my Inspiron 4100 lagged by a second or two from my friend's inspiron 4150 series setup. The faster hard drive on the 4150 also helped its performance significantly as well… especially when windows was forced to use hard drive swap space. My lag times could approach a 1/2 minute at times. The faster 266MHz memory (over my 133MHz)probably translates into at most 15+% more speed to the computer. It would not half the time to perform tasks on the computer. My Inspiron 4100 had a better video card (I had 64MB of dedicated video memory) versus the 32MB of video memory on the 4150 setup. This allowed my computer to keep up with the Inspiron 4150 especially in games with large textures (like First Person Shooters - Unreal, Quake, Serious Sam).

Earning a PC WorldBench 4 score of 98, the 4150's speed was among the best we've seen for a 1.8-GHz Pentium 4-M laptop running Windows XP. A ringer for its predecessor, the Inspiron 4100, the 4150 keeps the line's pleasingly trim and sensible design. The 4150 also inherited good battery life; in our tests it lasted just a couple of minutes shy of 3 hours on one charge. The components are easily accessible; the hard drive is held in by only one screw on the bottom of the notebook, and both the modular bay and the dell battery inspiron 4150 bay are located on the front. You can gain the use of a modular bay for an extra battery or hard disk by passing on the standard floppy drive–which carries a $20 value–and opting instead to pay an extra $10 for an 8MB DiskOnKey USB flash-storage device from M-Systems. DiskOnKey plugs directly into the notebook's USB port and requires no drivers when used with Windows Me or later. Unfortunately, Dell's listed price of $30 for the DiskOnKey (as a stand-alone option, rather than a $10 upgrade from the floppy drive) is rather high–competing USB memory drives start at $30 for twice as much storage.The keyboard isn't loaded with shortcut buttons the way most notebooks' are, but it is laid out comfortably and has a spongy yet pleasant feel. Color-conscious consumers can customize the unit and jazz up the palm rests with inserts of different hues and patterns (the cost ranges from $6 to $39 a set).
With its dual pointing devices and modular bay, the Inspiron 4150 would fit well in small to medium-size companies.

Sony VAIO PCG-Z1RSP Review

The Sony VAIO PCG-Z1RSP is one of the most stylish laptops to join the Centrino notebook parade. This slick thin-and-light carries the three Intel parts that make it an official Centrino: a Pentium M processor, an 802.11b Pro/wireless (Wi-Fi) mini-PCI card, and an 855PM chipset. The VAIO PCG-Z1RSP includes additional cool components, such as a DVD/CD-RW combo drive, a Memory Stick slot, and two USB 2.0 ports. Sony stuffs these parts inside a unique case that allows ports to be recessed from the edges. When all is said and done, the VAIO PCG-Z1RSP is a bit pricier than the competition; nevertheless, it's a fast, versatile, and great-looking notebook. Buy it if you care about style and wireless networking and you can live with the trade-offs.
The VAIO PCG-Z1RSP' case design is classic Sony, with cutting-edge good looks. The system measures 31.5cm wide, 24.6cm deep, just 2.29cm thick in front, and 3.81cm thick at the back where the battery props it up. It weighs 2.2kg by itself and 2.45kg with the AC adapter, placing it in the same weight range as other top thin-and-lights, including the IBM ThinkPad T40 battery and Dell Latitude D600 battery. Instead of a swappable media bay, which you'll find on most thin-and-lights, the VAIO PCG-Z1RSP includes an integrated (and not swappable) DVD/CD-RW combo drive. That's too bad, because you can't swap in a cheaper drive, such as a DVD-ROM drive, or a second battery. Of course, there's no built-in floppy drive on a system this small. You can buy an external floppy drive at Sony's Web site for AU$179.
Sony has done everything in its power to make the modest-sized VAIO Z1 appear even slimmer. The front and side edges slant backward at approximately 45-degree angles, giving the system a streamlined look. Halfway down each side, the edges have an S-shape, opening up a rectangular hole where Sony VAIO PCG-Z1RSP battery hides many of the laptop's ports. In addition to two USB 2.0 ports, headphone/microphone jacks, and one Type II PC Card slot, the left edge sports two Sony staples: an iLink (a.k.a. FireWire) port and a Memory Stick slot for storing music, images, and other files on Sony Memory Stick media. On the right edge sit the power button, a 56Kbps modem jack, and two system-status lights.
Unfortunately, the VAIO PCG-Z1RSP' keyboard and touchpad setup are less impressive than its angular case. The reasonably wide keyboard contains comfortable, if not extremely solid, keys. The plain-Jane touchpad is smooth and easy to use, although the two matchstick-size mouse buttons underneath the pad could be larger. A strip of average-sounding speakers is centered above the board. Two programmable buttons for launching applications also live above the keyboard, but they're barely bigger than the head of a pin.
Rather than offering wireless Wi-Fi (802.11b) networking as an option, Sony makes this a standard feature in the VAIO PCG-Z1RSP battery. All configurations offer Intel's 802.11b Pro/wireless 2100 mini-PCI card. Coupled with the Pentium M processor and the Intel 855PM chipset that come in every system, the Intel Wi-Fi card makes every Z1 a Centrino.
Sony preloads Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional onto the VAIO PCG-Z1RSP. The company also includes Microsoft Works, Money 2003, and Encarta Online. But the big software bonus comes in the form of Sony's useful multimedia-app bundle, which includes DVGate, SonicStage, and PictureGear Studio for working with DVDs, music, and photos, respectively.
The VAIO Z1 model that we tested, the VAIO VAIO PCG-Z1RSP, achieved impressive performance, especially for a notebook with the 1.3GHz Pentium M processor. The Pentium M processor was made from the ground up to keep its performance high even when unplugged, and the VAIO Z1 reaps the fruit of that labour. The processor plus the system's 512MB of DDR RAM allowed it to beat the 1.4GHz Pentium M-based IBM ThinkPad X31 which has a faster CPU but only 256MB of RAM.
In ZDNet Labs' tests, the sony VAIO PCG-Z1RSP battery for well over three hours, thanks to its 11.1V, 4,400mAh battery. But we expected more. With a lower-speed processor than those of the comparison systems, we expected the battery life to reach four hours. For instance, the IBM ThinkPad X31--even with a less powerful, 10.8V, 4,400mAh battery and a higher speed 1.4GHz Pentium M processor--achieved well over four hours of battery life.

HP Compaq Business Notebook 6715b Laptop Notebook Review

This HP Compaq laptop combines power with a good design and other great features to give you this fantastic business laptop. The laptop is Compaq's Business Notebook 6715b, which you can probably guess from the name is designed and specifically made for business people, and so therefore comes with vindows vista business already in installed on it, this offers some extra features and programs compared to the other vistas and comes with Intervideo WinDVD, HP Quick Launch Button Software, HP ProtectTools Security Manager, HP Wireless Assistant, Synaptics Touchpad Driver, HP Backup and Recovery Manager, Roxio Easy Media Creator 9, HP OpenView Radia Management Agent, HP QuickLook.
The design is really good too. It is all in one colour, which is usually something that puts me off laptops, however this all black laptop has a cool square like shape to it and I think it makes the laptop look really modern. The edge around the screen isn't huge and is quite thin making this laptop look better and also reducing its size.
You would be forgiven for thinking, after seeing all the TV advertising, that the only notebooks you can buy are powered by Intel processors. But there are AMD alternatives out there and some offer good value for money. One of the latest in HP's Compaq business range is the AMD-powered 6715b, which offers a good set of features for under £650.
Even if you didn't know about Compaq being HP's business range, one look business notebook 6715b battery tells you all you need to know, as its austere black and grey styling leaves you in no doubt about the market sector at which it's aimed.
It's being sold under the ‘Balanced Mobility' banner and, while the first part of that is fine, we have to question whether a notebook that weighs in at 2.9kg (including power adapter) and measures 357 x 265 x 35mm is truly mobile.
True, it's lighter than most desktop replacement notebooks out there, but you are still going to suffer if you have to lug it around all day, and while the whole thing feels well built, the screen has a noticeable amount of flex in it, so hp compaq business notebook 6715b battery care should be taken as to what you pack next to it.
Both laptops are based on AMD’s M690T chipset supporting up to 4GB of 677MHz DDR2 memory. HP Compaq 6515b and 6715b weigh 5lbs and 5.7lbs respectively and come with Windows Vista or Windows XP operating systems.

Hewlett-Packard Pavilion ZD8000 Review

Hewlett-Packard's zd8000 sits firmly between the "too cool for school" and the kitchen-sink style of laptop. This Media Center monster weighs in at 10.5 pounds and has just about everything under the sun stuffed into its 11 x 15-inch body. There is a DVD burner, a six-in-one card reader, four USB 2.0 ports, and a FireWire port. The system uses a Harman Kardon speaker system and has a beautiful 17-inch LCD. HP has begun using brighter and clearer screens, resulting in better viewing angles and great DVD playback.

The HP Pavilion zd8000 is a terrific multimedia notebook that's packed with new technologies like Microsoft Windows XP Media Center 2005, PCI Express graphics, and an ExpressCard slot.
The zd8000 scored the highest multimedia ratings we've seen on any notebook. It also has a gorgeous BrightView 17-inch widescreen display and an external HP USB Dual TV tuner, which lets you watch one show while recording another. Its Harman Kardon speakers had impressive sound.
The zd8000 comes with the new ExpressCard/54 PC Card slot—which offers high-speed transfers of 250 Mbps each way—and PCI Express graphics from the 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X600 card. But its gaming test scores were average, because of its basic X600 GPU.

The star of the Media Center is an external dual TV/FM radio tuner manufactured by Adaptec. This dual tuner let us bring in two shows at once and record one show while watching another. The hp pavilion zd8000 series battery runs Windows Media Center 2005, which looks incredibly rich and full on the huge screen. We were able to record TV and burn it to CD or DVD with Sonic Solution's embedded Media Center burner.
To add TV or video to our DVD, all we had to do was select "Other Programs" from the Main Menu, insert a disk, select the video with HP's new slimmed-down remote, and sit back and wait. The zd8000's 4X DVD-R burner did the rest.
For the geeks out there, however, the zd8000's motherboard includes PCI Express and a PCI Express(otherwise known as ExpressCard/54) slot on the side. HP has chosen a PCI Express-enabled graphics card, the ATI Radeon Mobility X600 with 256MB of memory for high-end game playing. The card isn't much faster than a standard AGP card, but it's still powerful enough to pump out 11152 3DMarks.
In fact, PCI Express is almost overkill in this system. The technology is a super-fast variant of the PCI standard, and is just beginning to appear on desktop motherboards. The fact that the technology is actually appearing simultaneously on laptops and desktops speaks to the popularity of portable PCs.
What does PCI Express give you right now? Not much. ExpressCards are not widely available and any speed increases offered by, say, an ExpressCard USB card are obviously offset by the slower speeds offered even by USB 2.0. In the zd8000's case, HP is basically future-proofing an already steep investment.
The pavilion zd8000 series battery also includes 1GB of 400-MHz memory and a USB digital drive bay, which is a USB flash or hard drive that pops into the side of the laptop. We long for the day when the optical drive is a relic of the past and we simply carry around a full complement of flash drives containing all our software.
Generally, this laptop performs admirably when stacked up next to other media notebooks, and the next-generation hardware adds to the general ?gWow?h quotient. The case is standard, with an off-center trackpad with raised scroll surface, a full keyboard with a numeric keypad, and volume and wireless controls below the screen.
Unsurprisingly, with great power come great big fans. This laptop sounds like it's ready to take flight. As a result, we were lulled to sleep while watching TV, thanks to the white noise emanating from the zd8000.
All in all, PCI Express is not yet all it's cracked up to be. But as it is, the zd8000 is definitely a step into the future.
