Apple PowerBook G4 Series (15-inch Titanium)
Apple's sleek and stylish line of PowerBook G4 laptops includes three models to cover a range of uses. On the high end, the desktop-replacement 17-inch PowerBook G4 combines top-notch performance with a huge display for gamers and graphic designers. On the opposite end, the ultraportable 12-inch model is the smallest and least-expensive PowerBook. Balancing between these two extremes, the thin-and-light 15-inch Apple PowerBook G4 offers great performance in a 5.6-pound case.
Apple currently offers two varieties of its 15-inch PowerBook G4. The $1,999 (as of August 2005) model includes a 1.5GHz processor and a DVD/CD-RW combo drive, while the $2,299 model includes a slightly faster, 1.67GHz processor and a SuperDrive that can play and burn DVDs and CDs; if you don't anticipate burning DVDs, the less expensive model should be adequate. All 15-inch PowerBook G4s start with 512MB of relatively slow, 333MHz DDR SDRAM; a zippy 80GB, 5,400rpm hard drive (you can upgrade to a 100GB drive for $100); and ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics with 64MB dedicated memory. The systems also offer an impressive list of ports and connections, including two USB 2.0 ports; the rare combination of FireWire 400 and 800; a PC Card slot that accepts Type I and II PC Cards; and support for DVI, VGA, S-Video, and composite video. In addition, the laptops are equipped with Bluetooth and 802.11g Wi-Fi radios, as well as Gigabit Ethernet and modem jacks. For the budget-conscious, Apple's lower-end iBook series offers slower processors and a different design. HP Pavilion zd8000 Series Laptop
The general concensus seems to agree with the PC Mag blurb: "The HP Pavilion zd8000 is a terrific multimedia notebook..." This is one of the very best multimedia powerhouses, a good desktop replacement computer and an acceptable gaming pc. It features a Windows XP Media Center 2005, PCI Express graphics and an ExpressCard slot - all new technologies. Power comes from a Intel Pentium 4 540 (3.20GHz) processor coupled with 1MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB and a good 128MB DDR ATi Mobility RadeonX600 video card. Maximum Memory is 2 GB. Storage on this HP notebook computer is very respectable at 100GB but you might have to sacrifice some rotational speed. Display is a very crisp high-definition BrightView widescreen (1440 x 900) LCD. All the standard connections are present including: 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11b/g Wireless, Four USB2, Two FireWire, One Type II PC Card Slot, and 6-in-1 Media Reader. This is not a lightweight notebook - try sitting with this baby in your lap for a couple of hours and you're find out why. Coming in at 9.6 pounds (12.2 lbs. with AC adapter) the zd8000 is not suitable for business travelling. One of the first entries in the 'multimedia mobile or moveable desktop' notebooks. Moving away from just being a computer - to more of a working multimedia entertainment center. What's next? A 32" display on a laptop? - Don't laugh, it probably already in the works! Size: 15.7" Width x 10.9" Height x 1.9" Depth Cons: Some have noted short battery life and noisy fans. Pros: Excellent sound (Harman Kardon speakers), great visuals (17-inch BrightView screen), and powerful computer ( Intel® Pentium® 4, Processor 540, 3.2GHz).Conclusion: Powerful MultiMedia Package (TV, stereo, digital recorder, and computer) you can take from room to room in your home.

Asus Eee PC 4G (512 RAM)
The Asus Eee PC 4G (512 RAM) notebook was officially announced at the beginning of June at Computex Taipei. Today I met with Asus to get a close-up look at this new device and talk more about the company's goals with it. If Asus really can pull off selling this device for $250, it could be a very tempting companion PC for on the go.
First of all, here's a quick look at the specs the Asus Eee offers:

The startup time for the Eee is about 10 seconds, and that's when it's being slow. Shutdown is performed with the simple one click of an "off" icon in the lower right hand of the screen (this "off" graphic is always present) and the total shutdown time is a whopping 5 seconds. We've all been ruined by slow hard drives and a bloated Windows OS I know, but I felt kind of giddy with glee seeing such fast startup and shutdown.
The ASUS Eee PC 8G(1G RAM) uses a Linux based OS that Asus has customized themselves. Combine a small Linux footprint OS with a flash based hard drive and what results is this speedy startup that the device has. Just because the OS is light doesn't mean it doesn't do much. There's a ton of software features on board that will most definitely serve all of your basic needs. You can browse the web using FireFox, use Skype with the built-in web cam and microphone, open Word and Excel docs and edit them, view photos, listen to music files, use AOL IM, MSN messenger or just about any other major chat client via Kopete. In other words, all the basic functions you perform on a PC you can do on the Eee PCPerformance
You already know the bootup time is fast, and I'm happy to say that not once did I ever see an hour glass (or, whatever might indicate "waiting" in this Linux OS) when opening an application. Everything was just instant. Apparently the included Intel 900MHz processor is powerful enough. Unfortunately we didn't have a wireless connection handy when using the device, so I couldn't test the devices abilities to quickly download and process web pages. It is 802.11g capable so I trust throughput speeds would be fast, the question is on how fast the processor can render large web pages.
Software and OS
The home screen is very simple and intuitive. You bootup and see the "Internet" tab where you can quickly double click on any icon there to open an application related to the Internet. Double clicking on "Web" launches FireFox for instance. There are six different tabs across the top labeled "Web", "Work", "Learn", "Play", "Settings" and Favorites. Each tab had applications or links to websites underneath that corresponded with the description. For instance under the work tab were Google docs or Open office applications. Under the "Learn" tab was a link to Wikipedia -- often some of the icons when double clicked would just launch websites.
There were some pretty intense games under the "Play" tab, I can attest Penguin Racer ran flawlessly and Solitaire was blazing.
UsabilityThe keyboard is definitely small and takes some getting used to, I initially found that pecking at keys was faster than doing a normal style fast type. It's just hard not to fat finger the wrong key or two keys at once, even if you have medium sized fingers. The keyboard also had a bit of rattle and shake to it, but it definitely worked for getting the job done. Nobody will use this as their main PC, but if you're at Starbucks and want to surf the web and crank out a few emails, the keyboard is absolutely serviceable for that. I wouldn't write my disseration or anything on it though, you're just asking for carpal tunnel by doing that.
The touchpad worked fine and the single button mouse was easy enough to use, there's no need for a right mouse button in this software environment.
Screen
The screen is no 300nit glossy display, but it's absolutely serviceable. Brightness is perfect and coloration is decent.
Ports and FeaturesI was most impressed to see three USB ports on this thing, and at the same time even more angry that my 14" screen notebook that cost $2,000 only has two USB ports. In a notebook with a 7" screen, what more could you want than what you see is offered below?
Any noise and heat?On the whole the Asus Eee was very quiet thanks to the flash drive, but it does have a fan and it did make a bit of noise trying to keep itself cool. We were in a very, very warm room (about 80F) during the meeting so the Eee got noticeably warm. If the room temperature was something more sane like 70F then I would expect the Eee would feel much cooler to the touch.
Build and DesignTo be honest Asus could have made this thing as ugly as the OLPC (bright green) and it would still be appealing for $250. But as it is there's not much to complain about with design. It's white all over with some black around the screen. It's not glossy or anything fancy, but that means it won't pickup fingerprints either. The LED lights on the front are actually nice.
The build is as you would expect for a budget $250 PC, a little shaky. It felt and looked like plastic and if this thing were stepped on I'm sure the result would not be pretty. Having said that, it didn't feel like it was made of something as thin as milk jug plastic. You'd probably want to just put it in a rigid case if you were carrying it in a backpack with a bunch of books, I'm sure a Calculus and Biology book smashed up against it could also have bad results.Asus had initially said that the Eee PC Laptop would start at $199, but they're thinking now is more like $250 for the 8GB flash drive version and somewhat more for a 16GB version. They're still looking at late August for availability of the device, and it should be offered world-wide. I hope Asus can do a good job in making this device widely available, it's really quite compelling for the price and it will be interesting to see what type of people look to buy this.

Taking Care Of Your New Battery Pack
Normally, a new fujitsu fpcbp68 battery pack comes in a very low charge condition and must be fully charged before use. Refer to the user manual of your portable electronic equipment for charging instructions.
A new battery pack needs to be fully charged and fully discharged or "cycled" as much as five times to condition them into performing at full capacity.
Your equipment may report a fully charge condition in as short as 10 to 15 minutes when the new omnibook xe3b series battery pack is being charged for the first time. This is a normal phenomenon especially for Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cad) and Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) chemistries. When this happens, remove the battery pack and let it cool down for about fifteen minutes then repeat the charging procedure.
"Conditioning" (fully discharging and then fully charging) is necessary so as to maintain the optimum performance of a battery pack, and is recommended at least once a month particularly for Ni-Cad and Ni-MH batteries. Failure to do so could result in reduced charge capacity and can significantly shorten the Sony Pcga-bp2v laptop batterypack’s useful life. Lithium Ion batteries do not require conditioning.
It is normal for a laptop computer battery pack to get warm when charging and during use. However, if the battery pack gets excessive hot, there may be a problem with the portable electronic equipment’s charging circuit and should therefore be checked by a qualified technician.
Rechargeable hp laptop batteries undergo self-discharging when left unused for long periods of time. This is normal particularly in the case of Ni-MH and Li-Ion chemistries. For best results, always store a battery pack fully charged. It should be removed from the equipment and kept in a cool, dry and clean place.
The amount of runtime a laptop battery pack produces depends on the power requirements of components in your electronic equipment. This could be the hard drive setting, screen intensity and back-lighting on notebook computers, the liquid crystal display (LCD) screen and floodlight feature in a video camcorder, or the tri-mode communications network of a cellular phone. Dell Inspiron 6000
This 6000 has a lot more going for it than just its extra-high-resolution screen. We didn't test the 6000's standard six-cell battery; but we did test the nine-cell battery (a $99 option), and it lasted an impressive 5 hours and 7 minutes on one charge, making the dell inspiron 6000 an excellent candidate for the road--if you don't mind its 7.5-pound weight (sans power adapter). An extra-fancy external power gauge helps you keep track of when you'll need to recharge.
The 6000 disappointed us in only a few areas. We missed having an external switch for controlling Wi-Fi scanning (you have to use a software utility instead). And the 6000's memory card reader accepts only Secure Digital cards for exchanging data with PDAs, cameras, and other digital equipment, leaving Memory Sticks, CompactFlash cards, and other media incompatible.
biggest reservation, however, relates to the Inspiron's keyboard. The layout is typical of a Dell portable--well designed and roomy--except that is buried in a cluster of size keys. Two big, easy-to-press mouse buttons complement the touchpad. But the keys on our test unit were so stiff initially that we had to type forcefully. As we continued to type, the keyboard seemed to limber up, and we made fewer mistakes. But we still felt that we had to type more carefully than usual, not a good omen for a long-term relationship with a keyboard. If possible, try out the keyboard before buying.
You'll like the 6000's panel of dedicated CD controls and its surprisingly good stereo sound. (Only one other model in our roundup, the Fujitsu LifeBook N6010, offered better audio.) There's no instant-on button for playing discs without using Windows, but you can play CDs while the lid is closed, because the music buttons and speaker outlets remain exposed. Pressing one of the buttons momentarily lights the entire music panel's bright blue LEDs, a helpful feature in dark environments.
The 2-GHz Pentium M 760-equipped review unit did well in our speed tests, earning a WorldBench 5 score of 89, about 8 percent above the average for systems equipped with the same processor.
