Dell's Inspiron 1100 series budget desktop replacement is probably one of the oldest systems available for under $1000 and its components show that age. The shipping to return the monitor would have been $50 and my monitor only cost $165, so I decided to take it apart and remount it using cable ties. It looks horrible and is lopsided, but it works. The real problem I am having is with the Dimension. This is the slowest computer, and has been from day one. Also, it has a tendency to freeze up a lot and I find I have to restart it completely. Dell products used to be great quality, but we have gone through 4 Dell laptops and 2 Dell computers in a period of three years. Each time, we have to end up buying another computer. One time, it was because the laptop was purchased overseas while on military deployment, so the standard warranty offered, wasn?t valid, though its laptop battery very power.

All in all, if you're seeking a notebook for word processing, e-mailing, or browsing the Internet, this is a reasonable choice. But other units, like the HP Pavilion ze4400 battery, give you greater value for your money.

LIKE MANY THINGS IN the PC industry these days, laptop computers are a fairly mature sort of product. We all know about the basic types and sizes, and how the inevitable tradeoffs in display performance, size, weight, dell xps m1210 battery life and display real estate tend to work. The Dell XPS M1210, however, embodies an uncommon concept in portable computers. Like its bigger brothers in the XPS line, it looks to bring near-desktop-class performance into a mobile form factor. Unlike its sibilings, though, it targets the true ultraportable form factor, the featherweight class of laptops with 12.1" wide-aspect displays. Combining these two goals may sound like a recipe for dissonance, but Dell has managed to pull off the feat with surprising style. The result is a laptop PC that packs more computing power per pound and per square inch than any other solution I can think of—you know, casually, while sitting here, not really Googling for it or anything.

The point is that the M1210 is both refreshing and really quite good, and we've worked up a full review of it for your reading pleasure. We've also taken the opportunity to compare the M1210 to a couple of older laptops in way that gives us a look at three generations of Centrino mobile technology.

I look at the spec sheet above and think our M1210 is fairly well appointed, but like many high-end ultraportables, a fully-loaded XPS M1210 offers a whole range of communications gizmos and mobility widgets that our review unit lacks. Those include a Bluetooth module, a webcam with integrated microphone, a DVD burner rather than a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo, and a WWAN card for mobile broadband connectivity via cell phone networks. You could also pick a slower 5400-RPM hard drive (blech) or a slower CPU (which might be a sensible money-saving choice).

Battery

Instead of running battery benchmark tests I used a real world battery drain test. At 100% charge I set the screen to half-brightness and pulled the plug on the XPS M1210. I then performed various tasks such as downloading and installing Half Life 2 and playing it for a bit, surfing the web, downloading and installing 3DMark05, watching 10 minutes of a DVD, edited some photos for this review and also turned off wireless and just let the M1210 idle for some time. In doing all of this the 9-cell battery ran down to 5% charge and Windows shut the notebook down at 2h 58 mins of usage. Since the XPS M1210 here is configured with a dedicated graphics card and faster processor and I left wi-fi on, that time isn't bad. If you had integrated graphics, wi-fi off and set your screen brightness lower you could easily achieve 4.5 hours. My test was pretty abusive in terms of using demanding programs while on battery power.

The power adapter for the M1210 isn't exactly small, it's only somewhat smaller to those you get with other Dell notebooks, so that part of the system doesn't fall under 'ultraportable' either.

MSI Wind U100 Laptop Review

The MSI Wind is the latest entrant to the already overflowing ultra portable notebook market with the Asus EEE PC 700 / 900 / 1000, HP 2133 Mini Note, ACi Ultra Mini, Everex Cloudbook, HCL MiLeap fighting for market share and the Acer Aspire One and Dell 500 just about to enter. This promises to be a savage competition and is currently being led by the Asus EEE PC’s having the first mover’s advantage. The Asus EEE PC 701 was a runaway hit following its launch in 2007 and grabbed many awards including the “The most wanted Christmas Gift”. It was a favorite everywhere and created a new low cost, ultra portable notebook or “Netbook” category with many other manufacturers jumping in to offer their creations. Of these, the new MSI Wind seems to be the most promising one with its good balance of price, features and portability. It seems to be the only viable option to the EEE PC’s. The new range of EEE PCs namely the 900 / 1000 are priced a bit high, competing more with normal notebooks in terms of price. They aren’t very portable either like the EEE PC 701’s. In this review we look at the MSI Wind and check whether it manages to grab the crown from the ruling EEE PC’s.

Design

The MSI Wind has a nice clean design and looks very similar to the white EEE PC with an almost similar layout and battery position. It has a glossy look and soft rounded edges which make it great to look at and work with. In all, it has a nice sombre look that looks great and likeable. It has an excellent build quality which is inspired from the Asus EEE PC and the HP Mini Note 2133. The build materials used are top quality which makes working with the MSI Wind U100 a pleasure. The MSI Wind has dimensions of 10.2″ x 7″ x 1.3″ and is slightly bigger than the EEE PC due to its larger 10″ screen. It is light and very portable at just 1.3 KG.

The MSI Wind houses a USB 2.0 port, a 4 in 1 memory card reader, mic and headphone jacks, a VGA port, and an Ethernet jack on the right side. On the left, you find 2 more USB 2.0 ports and the power jack and the fan exhaust. On the rear is the battery and the front is graced by cute little activity LEDs.

Review

The Wind comes in a variety of specifications with the differences being a choice of combination between Windows Home or Linux and 1GB or 512MB or RAM. The review machine ran Microsoft Windows XP Home. XP Home is not my favoured version of XP, but its choice for this application is a sensible one well-suited to modestly-specified hardware.

In use the machine proved to be very responsive at all times. The 1GB of RAM and 1.6 GHz Intel Atom cpu were more than amply sufficient for all tasks I threw at it. Applications launched quickly, menus popped up with no noticeable lag and boots times were very short. In general use it felt as fast as my dual core Toshiba laptop. I am the sort of geek who likes to strip out unnecessary clutter from operating systems and using something like XP Lite would probably yield some significant performance improvements again.

As a test of the Wind’s portability and usability I took it with me on holiday to the wilds of north-west Scotland with my very limited luggage aboard my motorcycle. The Wind was ideal - back at base in my hotel in the evening I was able to view high-quality photos I had taken on my travels and watch high-quality video filmed with my onboard camera, whilst picking up mails, doing a bit of surfing and drinking some very fine Isle of Skye Blaven beer in the bar. Fantastic – this is what the portable computing experience should be about.

The keyboard was spacious; it felt solid and better than many vastly more expensive laptops. It gave good tactile feedback and proved to be easy to use – again the best by far of any sub-note I have used. As one might expect, there’s a number of function keys situated on the top row of the keyboard to allow quick access to wi-fi/bluetooth, speaker mute, screen brightness and lock controls.

The mouse glidepad was good for a machine of this size and the mouse buttons I am pleased to say were the best of any sub-note that I have used to date – better than the Acer Aspire One or any of the Eees. Nothing more needs to be said.

The screen is a 1024x600 affair capable of displaying enough information for the sort of use intended. Unlike the M912 I reviewed it’s bright and sharp. It is also physically bigger than any other machine at 10” which, means that everything is bigger and clearer. I suffered no eye strain using it for several hours at a time.

Video and mp3 playback was faultless. As with all laptops the speakers were lightweight, but audio performance through headphones was just fine. This is a machine I would be happy to watch a movie on at any time. Several movies in fact.

The 80GB 2.5” SATA hdd was speedy and capacious enough. It was also divided into several partitions with one for the main operating system, one for data and another for backup purposes. I’m pleased to note that the latest revision of the Wind at the time of writing had received an upgrade to a 120GB drive for no price increase. Nice.

The MSI Wind comes with built-in 802.11/g wi-fi, Bluetooth and an Ethernet port to satisfy all connectivity requirements. For me these are essential and I suspect that this would be so for anyone else. There’s no firewire port, but one could argue that it’s superfluous on a machine that is unlikely to be used for video editing work.

The MSI Wind U100 battery is a 4400mAh item that proved to be disappointing when it came to endurance – lasting only for about 2hrs of general use. More could possibly be squeezed from it when using the “turbo battery” mode which basically downclocks the processor to 800Mhz, but as most drain is due to the hard drive and screen then I doubt it would deliver a significant improvement. This sort of life is perhaps the only chink in the Wind’s armour because its sheer usability encourages one to use it lots and this is only limited by the short battery life. The battery itself is housed very securely within the rear of the chassis which, adds to the overall feel of good quality.

One other disappointment is the lack of access to the hard drive bay and memory slots/s. Basically there is none – access would require the machine to be taken apart and would, of course, void the warranty. The good news is that with XP Home extra RAM is not really ever going to be necessary.

DCRP Review: HP Photosmart R707

If you think about innovation in digital photography, you probably think of Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Olympus, etc. But the truth is that HP is one of the few companies coming up with new and useful features for their cameras, instead of just dropping a higher resolution CCD into the same tired body this year. Their latest camera, the 5.1 Megapixel Photosmart R707 ($349) is a showpiece for HP innovation. Some of the cool features that you'll find on the R707 include:

• In-camera redeye removal
• Adaptive Lighting - a kind of "digital flash" that really works
• In-camera panorama preview
• Image Advice - analyzes your images and tells you how they can be improved
• Instant Share - mark pictures for easy printing or e-mailing
• Ability to undelete a photo you trashed

What's in the Box?
Before we begin, I should mention that there are several different models of the R707 going around. There's an R707, R707v, and R707xi (at least). Rest assured that the camera is always the same -- it's usually just a difference in the software bundle.

The HP Photosmart R707 has a very good bundle. Inside the box, you'll find:

• lithium-ion rechargeable HP PHOTOSMART R707 battery
• AC adapter / battery charger
• Wrist strap
• USB cables (one for computers, one for printers)
• CD-ROM featuring HP Image Zone software
• 191 page camera manual (printed)

The latest trend in digital cameras is to not bundle a memory card with the camera, instead hard-wiring memory right into the camera. The R707 has 32MB of on-board memory, of which 27MB is available for photo storage -- not a whole lot. So I recommend buying a memory card right away. The camera supports both SD and MMC memory cards, though I recommend the former due to its superior capacity and performance.

You won't need to buy a battery right away, as HP includes the R07 lithium-ion battery in the box. This compact battery doesn't have too much power -- just 3.8 Wh of energy -- but HP estimates an average of 200 shots per charge, which isn't too bad for a compact camera like this.

If you've been visiting this site for a while you know my position on proprietary batteries like the one used by the R707. For one, they're expensive -- buying another one (which I recommend) will set you back $50. My other complaint, that you cannot use alkaline batteries to get you through the day, isn't totally valid here. That's because the R707 supports Duracell's CP1 disposable battery. That would be all well and good if these batteries were readily available, but they're not -- at least not yet.

When it's time to charge the battery, plug in the included AC adapter. Charging takes a whopping 5 to 7 hours! The AC adapter can also be used to power your camera, thus saving the battery for when you really need it.

The optional Photosmart R-series dock ($79) is the best camera dock that I've seen -- it does it all. You can use it for charging the camera's battery, transferring photos to your Mac or PC, and playing back photos on your TV. Thanks to the included remote control, you can use the dock and your television from the comfort of your sofa. The remote lets you view photos, navigate the menus, tag photos for printing, and even do the "zoom and scroll" feature! Do note that the remote can only be used in playback mode. But wait -- there's more. The dock can charge a spare battery, too (see above photo), in about half the time as it would inside the camera.

The Photosmart R707 has a built-in lens cover, so there are no lens caps to worry about. As you can see, it's a pretty small camera.

Accessories for this compact camera are limited. You can purchase a quick recharge kit which includes an external charger, extra battery, travel pouch, and a camera case for $80. The quick charger takes just an hour to fully charge the R07 battery. The only other accessory is a premium camera case ($30) -- there are no lens accessories for this camera.

The area where HP's Photosmart cameras really shine is in the software department. HP's Image Zone Software is for Mac OS X and Windows. The Mac version is 7.1.9, while the Windows version is 3.5. Combined with the Instant Share system on the camera (more on that later), HP has created a system that lets you easily share photos in a number of ways.

Above is the main part of the software, known as HP Gallery, where you can view and edit photos, as well as send them to the other programs included in the package.

The software can do basic photo editing like adjusting contrast, sharpening/blurring, and removing redeye. You can crop and rotate photos as well.

The most impressive parts of the software package are the photo sharing tools. You can share photos via prints, online albums, e-mail, or even CDs, all using the HP software.

The software doesn't actually e-mail the photos to people anymore. Now it puts them on the web and sends the link to your recipients.

Printing photos is very easy as well, and there are all kinds of prints to choose from, ranging from albums to greeting cards.

If you've got a CD-R/RW drive, one of the coolest features it he ability to create a CD with your photos.
Using the HP Memories Disc Creator Software, you can make a Video CD containing your photos. They are presented as a slide show, and you can even pick a song from your MP3 collection to use as background music. The whole process takes just a few minutes, and then you've got a CD you can share with friends and family. The catch is that you need a fairly modern DVD player to read these discs (most computers can see them), and the Video CD quality isn't the greatest. Still, it's a nice product to include with the camera.

The Photosmart R707's manual should stand as an example to some of the other manufacturers who think a digital camera is a VCR (it's not). There are good explanations for the cameras features, without a lot of fine print.
