DCRP Review: HP Photosmart R707

If you think about innovation in digital photography, you probably think of Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Olympus, etc. But the truth is that HP is one of the few companies coming up with new and useful features for their cameras, instead of just dropping a higher resolution CCD into the same tired body this year. Their latest camera, the 5.1 Megapixel Photosmart R707 ($349) is a showpiece for HP innovation. Some of the cool features that you'll find on the R707 include:

  • In-camera redeye removal
  • Adaptive Lighting - a kind of "digital flash" that really works
  • In-camera panorama preview
  • Image Advice - analyzes your images and tells you how they can be improved
  • Instant Share - mark pictures for easy printing or e-mailing
  • Ability to undelete a photo you trashed
Of course, none of that matters if the camera doesn't take decent pictures. Find out how the R707 performed in our tests -- starting right now!

What's in the Box?
Before we begin, I should mention that there are several different models of the R707 going around. There's an R707, R707v, and R707xi (at least). Rest assured that the camera is always the same -- it's usually just a difference in the software bundle.

The HP Photosmart R707 has a very good bundle. Inside the box, you'll find:
  • The 5.1 effective Megapixel Photosmart R707 camera
  • lithium-ion rechargeable HP PHOTOSMART R707 battery
  • AC adapter / battery charger
  • Wrist strap
  • USB cables (one for computers, one for printers)
  • CD-ROM featuring HP Image Zone software
  • 191 page camera manual (printed)
The latest trend in digital cameras is to not bundle a memory card with the camera, instead hard-wiring memory right into the camera. The R707 has 32MB of on-board memory, of which 27MB is available for photo storage -- not a whole lot. So I recommend buying a memory card right away. The camera supports both SD and MMC memory cards, though I recommend the former due to its superior capacity and performance.

You won't need to buy a battery right away, as HP includes the R07 lithium-ion battery in the box. This compact battery doesn't have too much power -- just 3.8 Wh of energy -- but HP estimates an average of 200 shots per charge, which isn't too bad for a compact camera like this.

If you've been visiting this site for a while you know my position on proprietary batteries like the one used by the R707. For one, they're expensive -- buying another one (which I recommend) will set you back $50. My other complaint, that you cannot use alkaline batteries to get you through the day, isn't totally valid here. That's because the R707 supports Duracell's CP1 disposable battery. That would be all well and good if these batteries were readily available, but they're not -- at least not yet.

When it's time to charge the battery, plug in the included AC adapter. Charging takes a whopping 5 to 7 hours! The AC adapter can also be used to power your camera, thus saving the battery for when you really need it.
Optional dock. Note the video out, DC-in, and USB ports on the side

Another look at the dock plus its remote control

The optional Photosmart R-series dock ($79) is the best camera dock that I've seen -- it does it all. You can use it for charging the camera's battery, transferring photos to your Mac or PC, and playing back photos on your TV. Thanks to the included remote control, you can use the dock and your television from the comfort of your sofa. The remote lets you view photos, navigate the menus, tag photos for printing, and even do the "zoom and scroll" feature! Do note that the remote can only be used in playback mode. But wait -- there's more. The dock can charge a spare battery, too (see above photo), in about half the time as it would inside the camera.

The Photosmart R707 has a built-in lens cover, so there are no lens caps to worry about. As you can see, it's a pretty small camera.

Accessories for this compact camera are limited. You can purchase a quick recharge kit which includes an external charger, extra battery, travel pouch, and a camera case for $80. The quick charger takes just an hour to fully charge the R07 battery. The only other accessory is a premium camera case ($30) -- there are no lens accessories for this camera.

The area where HP's Photosmart cameras really shine is in the software department. HP's Image Zone Software is for Mac OS X and Windows. The Mac version is 7.1.9, while the Windows version is 3.5. Combined with the Instant Share system on the camera (more on that later), HP has created a system that lets you easily share photos in a number of ways.

Above is the main part of the software, known as HP Gallery, where you can view and edit photos, as well as send them to the other programs included in the package.

The software can do basic photo editing like adjusting contrast, sharpening/blurring, and removing redeye. You can crop and rotate photos as well.

The most impressive parts of the software package are the photo sharing tools. You can share photos via prints, online albums, e-mail, or even CDs, all using the HP software.

The software doesn't actually e-mail the photos to people anymore. Now it puts them on the web and sends the link to your recipients.

Printing photos is very easy as well, and there are all kinds of prints to choose from, ranging from albums to greeting cards.

If you've got a CD-R/RW drive, one of the coolest features it he ability to create a CD with your photos.
Using the HP Memories Disc Creator Software, you can make a Video CD containing your photos. They are presented as a slide show, and you can even pick a song from your MP3 collection to use as background music. The whole process takes just a few minutes, and then you've got a CD you can share with friends and family. The catch is that you need a fairly modern DVD player to read these discs (most computers can see them), and the Video CD quality isn't the greatest. Still, it's a nice product to include with the camera.

The Photosmart R707's manual should stand as an example to some of the other manufacturers who think a digital camera is a VCR (it's not). There are good explanations for the cameras features, without a lot of fine print.

    DELL INSPIRON 510M SERIES

The Inspiron line of laptops from Dell is designed with the consumer or small business user in mind. These people are often considered to be buying a small number of machines on a strict budget. Therefore, they are looking for the best in performance and the latest technology at a competitive price.

    SCREEN SIZE
The Dell Inspiron 510m (£1115 inc. VAT) is a two-spindle laptop that’s been designed with the semi-mobile user in mind. This is borne out by the choice of an integrated graphics solution – the Intel 855GME chipset. Although it’s sufficient for 2D office applications, it isn’t enabled to handle the latest 3Dfeatures found in dedicated graphics cards. Our review unit came supplied with a 15-inchTFT panel that has a native resolution of 1400 x1050 pixels. For those on a tighter budget, a14.1-inch panel is available, saving the buyer£94 (inc. VAT) on the price, but the panel is of a lower 1024 x 768-pixel resolution.

If your budget stretches to include the higher definition screen we would recommend you opt for it. When it comes to raw processing power, the510m offers a great deal in the way of performance. Fitted with a 1.7GHz Pentium M processor, the Inspiron produced a MobileMark 2002score of 170. If you are looking for a machine that can handle standard office applications with ease, the Inspiron 510m will take some beating. Our review unit was supported by512MB DDR SDRAM and a 60GB Hitachi hard drive, which runs at the faster 5400rpm rate, a speed that’s becoming the standard for performance systems.

This specification also managed to impress us in terms of battery life, with the 510m lasting on average for 216 minutes from a single charge. While this figure is shy of four hours of usability away from mains power, it still offers more than enough use for a typical session away from the desk. Finished in the Inspiron range’s now familiar grey and blue, the 510m is an attractive laptop that should look impressive in any home or office. In the past there has been a problem with the usability of Dell’s keyboards. Previous versions of the Inspiron have had keys with a shallow amount of travel, which users have not always been happy with. The 510m has, however, moved away from the old keyboard, in favour of a keyboard with greater travel. While this adds a degree of rattle to the keys, we found that it was quite comfortable to use. Dell has also opted to fit smaller mouse buttons below the touchpad. However, they are of solid construction.

    OPTICAL DRIVE

At this price point, the Dell Inspiron 510m series is fitted with a HL-DT-ST DVD/CD-RW combination drive. However, a DVD+RW is available as an optional upgrade for an additional£82 (inc. VAT). The new multi-purpose drive bay can also hold a second battery or hard drive if desired. Dell has found that while buyers are keen
to invest in wireless technology they don’t necessarily wish to buy into the Centurion package, as this limits the user to the 802.11b standard. Therefore, Dell makes it a simple option at the configuration stage, offering the buyer the choice of either Centrino’s IntelPRO/wireless adapter or its own TrueMobile 802.111b/g adapter, which comes supplied in the form of a mini-PCI card.

Dell has introduced an impressively priced laptop with a focus on the small office rather than as an all-round home machine. If you are looking for a laptop that offers the latest in processing speed, but you don’t require performance graphics, then the Dell Inspiron 510m is currently ahead of the pack.

    IBM THINKPAD T40 SERIES

Many people find laptop shopping to be a bit of a chore. In previous years, the selections available would always leave one wanting more. This has changed in 2003 with Apple, Compaq, Dell, Toshiba, and IBM all producing svelte yet powerful laptops, making the past dreams of a true desktop replacement a reality.

Excellent battery life usually is near the top of any list of must-have laptop features, with a good warranty a close second. My previous laptop had been a Gateway Solo 2500 which gave me about 3 hours of battery life when I first purchased it. The Solo 2500 also had a great warranty (which came in handy one more than one occasion). So with these requirements in mind, it was time to score a new portable. When the dust settled there was one laptop still standing: The IBM ThinkPad T40 Series. After reading about the prowess of its Pentium M CPU and excellent battery life, we were excited about buying ours and digging in.

    The laptop

We decided ultimately on the T40 2373-91u. The full specs on the machine are as follows:

    • Pentium M 1.6 Ghz
    • 512 MB PC2100 DDR
    • Hitachi Deskstar 80GB, 4200rpm
    • 14.1" SXGA (1400x1050)
    • ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 / 32 Meg
    • Intel Pro1000 gigabit Ethernet chipset
    • 56k V.92 modem
    • DVD/CD-RW

Usually the first remark you hear about the T40 is that it is built like a tank. Indeed, the rumors are true. While it is not completely indestructible, I have no fears about my T40 getting damaged in any minor calamity. While the lid gives a little when twisted, its magnesium alloy construction makes it nowhere near as malleable as the plastic on most laptops. The lid is attached to the base with two large metal hinges, and it would take a lot to break them off. The lid is also designed so its edges come around the base a little when it is closed. This provides a little more assurance against injury when you throw it in your bag.

All T40 models have dual USB 2.0 ports, S-video out, dual PCMCIA ports, and a parallel port. I would have loved to have seen FireWire standard on this notebook, but I don't think the omission is anywhere near being a deal breaker. The other drawback to the T40 is that only one of the memory slots is user-accessible. So you might want to max out the base RAM when ordering.

As far as software goes, the T40 is light in that department. The laptop comes preinstalled with Windows XP SP1, Norton A/V (Trialware), IBM recordnow (a.k.a., Stomp Recordnow), and Acrobat Reader. Most of the other applications IBM included basically duplicate the functionality of other programs. One example is the IBM Update Connector, which updates drivers and IBM software. We could not think of a reason to use this instead of Windows Update. Another odd inclusion is IBM Access Support. This software includes a handful of diagnostics and troubleshooters for the computer, which do about the same thing as the troubleshooters in Windows Help. In general, Windows comes with better software to do the same things all of the IBM software does. Fortunately, you are in no way forced to use any of these utilities. At least IBM does not load the system with apps that just waste away in the system tray.

There was no media packaged with the laptop, so in the case of total hard drive disaster, you are required to call IBM. What you get instead is a restore partition on the hard drive. This makes it easier for a large company to deploy their own images for easy restoring, but to the average user it means you pay for 6GB of disk space you can't use without reformatting. It also means that if you have a hard drive failure, you will be SOL. Fortunately, IBM will speedily send you a restore CD if you request one from tech support, or will send you a new hard drive if it is completely unusable. It would be nice if you could request to have it shipped with the computer.

One of the things to keep in mind about the ibm thinkpad t40 series t40 series is that it is designed in many ways for being deployed in droves across a large business. Features like Access IBM are more useful to large IT departments than to individuals who just want a laptop.

The ThinkPad comes with a standard three-year limited warranty, with a one-year warranty on the battery; pretty much standard issue. If you so desire, a more comprehensive warranty is available, which provides for next-day on-site repair. Past experience with the IBM warranty department has been pretty good, they are very hands-off, no off-base questions asked.

    HP PAVILION ZD7000 Laptop Review

HP Pavilion notebooks have always sounded great, so it's not surprising that the hp pavilion zd7000 has the best sound of any notebook with a 17-inch screen we've tested so far. The integrated Harman/Kardon stereo speakers produce loud, clear audio from a panel that extends across the front; the setup is great for listening to music or watching a movie playing in the fixed DVD+RW drive located on the right side of the unit. The huge screen is impressive, with a standard native resolution of 1440 by 900 pixels. Aided by the top-notch GeForce FX Go 5600 graphics card and 128MB of graphics RAM, the display is sharp and easy to read and offers room for comfortably viewing multiple documents side by side.

Our review unit had the Windows Media Center upgrade ($175, included in our listed price), which comes with an external USB TV tuner and a remote control for recording and watching TV programs on your notebook. If there were a subwoofer (to fill out the bass) and a complete set of audio-control buttons on the notebook--all you get is a volume toggle at the top of the keyboard--the Zd7000 would be the perfect big-screen multimedia portable.

The model we tested also came with a preinstalled 802.11g Mini-PCI card. The laptop is ready to be connected to other devices too, sporting a whopping four USB ports (two more than usual) plus a FireWire port, an S-Video-out port, and two PC Card slots. The multimedia card reader located above the notebook's infrared port on the right side can read SD/MMC, CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, and Memory Stick Pro cards.

Like most wide-screen notebooks, the hp pavilion Zd7000 is bulky and heavy. It measures almost 2 inches tall and weighs 9.3 pounds (11.1 pounds including the power adapter). Size has its advantages: The Zd7000's expanded keyboard includes a separate numerical keypad, useful for people who work frequently with numbers. The extrawide metallic-skinned touchpad incorporates a textured vertical scroll zone and a handy lock button that prevents you from accidentally repositioning the cursor while typing. A presentation shortcut button not only launches a customizable presentation application but also stores a preset resolution (for an external monitor or projector) and power scheme.

But size does not always guarantee a better design. The Zd7000's battery is one of the most difficult to remove that we've seen--we had to use the flat end of a screwdriver to pry open the bottom release. The big battery (one of the largest we've encountered) does not translate into long battery life, either, as the hp pavilion Zd7000 lasted only 1 hour, 48 minutes on one charge. However, since you'd likely have this hefty desktop replacement near an outlet all the time, battery life may be less of a concern.

Both the hard-drive and RAM slots are easy to reach in their compartments on the bottom of the notebook. Four small screws hold the panel covering the drive; RAM shares a cavernous compartment with the notebook's wireless network Mini-PCI card.

The 2.8-GHz Pentium 4-equipped notebook earned a PC WorldBench 4 score of 110, about the same as results we've seen from similarly equipped systems running Windows XP Professional, but slower than the scores from systems using mobile Pentium M processors.

If the Zd7000 will be your primary PC, HP's $249 Notebook Expansion Base could be a worthwhile addition (we didn't test it). It includes built-in Altec Lansing speakers and serves both as a port replicator and as a stand to elevate the notebook screen to eye level. The notebook docks front-end first into an upright sleeve and connects via a proprietary connection located on the left side. Also included in the package are a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse.

Home users looking for a desktop replacement that can double as a digital video recorder would like the HP Pavilion Zd7000; it would be ideal for college students who want both types of devices but have limited space. It is a heavy notebook with a weak battery, but these issues won't be important if you stay put most of the time.
